The basics of attic ventilation

The attic is usually the least glamorous part of the house. Unless you have remodeled it into a guest suite, study or some other usable space, it is normally where everything you do not want but “may need in the future” is stored. It is unused and unoccupied and, very often, unloved. But the attic is an important and integral part of the house and it needs to be looked after. Okay, it may not be possible to clean and mop the attic as frequently as the rest of the house, but keeping it dry and well-ventilated is vital.

The Importance of a Properly Ventilated Attic

A code-compliant house will have at least minimum attic ventilation. But that may not be enough. Ensuring that the space is well-ventilated by going in for attic fan installation goes a long way toward making your home a safer and more comfortable place.

Why Attic Ventilation?

The main reasons for ensuring proper ventilation through attic fan installation are given below:

  • Because attics face the sun, there can be considerable heat build-up. This heat could cause damage to the delicate items stored there. The heat will also radiate down to the rest of the house, making it warmer and increasing the air conditioning load, which, in turn, will add to the home’s power consumption. That is a double whammy of higher utility bills and a greater carbon footprint.
  • In cold weather, moisture tends to collect in the attic because cold air cannot carry as much moisture away as warm air. The cold air in the attic can condense and the insulation, joists, rafters and the bottom of the roof deck may become damp. This can cause structural damage that could entail huge repair costs. An attic fan will also help to prevent the formation of ice dams along the edges of the roof.
  • A dry, well-ventilated attic does not encourage the growth of mold which can develop unseen and unnoticed until it affects the health of the occupants of the home.
  • If an attic is well-ventilated, it opens up the possibility of making more productive use of the space. Instead of being a dumping ground for things you do not know what to do with (there are other places for that), it could be converted into an extra bedroom, office, family room or some other place that the family wants but doesn’t have the room to create.

Installing an attic fan requires a knowledge of the size of the fan required/the amount of airflow you need, the type of fan and where it is to be placed, arranging for the actual installation, and being prepared for a slight increase in your electricity bills. Or you can do it the easy way - contact a Solatube attic fan dealer. Solatube fans are known for their quality and reliability. There is a range of fans to suit all attic sizes and ventilation needs. Being solar-powered, your electricity bill will not go up. Also, installing this type of fan will qualify you for a federal tax credit.
